Vinland Saga Prologue Review

OK guys! I have been reading a manga called Vinland Saga. You probably heard of it. It's on many top 50 manga lists. So I started reading it, and I just got to Chapter 55: The End of the Prologue. I was gonna wait and read the entire manga before I review it but fuck it, I'll do Chapter 1 through 55 and then review the rest of it when I'm done.

*SPOILER ALERT* This review will contain spoilers

PLOT REVIEW

The vikings attack a fortress by carrying their ships on land.
Alright the manga starts with a siege on a fort by a Frank noble. He hires a 100-men squad of barbarians to aid him in his conquest. This squad is led by a man called Askalad who commands an eighteen-year-old boy called Thorfinn to kill at least a commander and he will grant him his "prize". Thorfinn manages to murder a captain and slaughters an entire squadron. He then presents Askalad with the captain's head and demands a duel. Askalad defeats him and Thorfinn shares his past with a slave woman.
A caption informs us that these people are the Russ, commonly known as vikings.
Thors dies
Thorkell f*cks shit up
Where this manga shines (so far) is Thorfinn's back story. I really enjoyed finding out what drove Thorfinn to join a man he clearly resents. I will not spoil the entire back story because it really is good. So Thorfinn was the son of a "farmer" called Thors and a woman called Helga. One day his father is summoned by a person called Floki. It turns out that Thors is actually an ex-soldier known as the Troll of Jom. He accepts and dispatches to Norway. Thorfinn sneaks up on his boat and they are attacked by the vikings. Thors challenges Askalad to a duel. The vikings cheat by taking Thorfinn hostage and thus the Troll of Jom dies. Thorfinn takes his father's daggers and embarks on a quest of vengence. Askalad promises Thorfinn a fair duel if Thorfinn helps him with his jobs. The next arc, I guess I should say, is the siege of London. Denmark has hired the vikings to help them battle the English. Askalad finds out that London is being protected by Thorkell the Giant. Thorkell is the first villain of the series but we'll talk about him later. Askalad orders Thorfinn to kill Thorkell and he will grant him a duel. Thorfinn attacks the Giant and cuts two of his fingers, but fails to kill him. Later on, Askalad finds out that Thorkell has captured the prince of Denmark (and no I don't mean Hamlet, that was a terrible joke) and his bodyguard. Askalad's party manages to free the prince and his bodyguard and the next ten to twenty chapters is a wild goose chase between Thorkell's party and Askalad's group. When Thorkell finally reached Askalad's party he got his rematch with Thorfinn, this time however Thorfinn beat the Giant. Meanwhile Prince Canute realised God was not trying to help them and took responsability upon himself, ordering everyone to stop fighting. Thorkell and Askalad make ammends and promise prince Canute to help him overthrow his father.
Askalad goes "mad"

Askalad crafts a plan to kill the king of Denmark, but they are betrayed by Ragnar's brother. The King of Denmark announces that he will invade Wales, which is Askalad's birthplace. Askalad loses his shit and kills the king in front of a bunch of nobles and soldiers. Prince Canute realizes that Askalad is actually pretending to be mad to save Wales and Canute and orders his soldiers to kill Askalad. Askalad murders them all and then battles Floki. As he prepares to kill Floki he is distracted by Thorfinn. Prince Canute takes this chance and stabs Askalad through the heart. The prologue ends with Prince Canute placing the Danish Crown on his head and Thorfinn crying over Askalad's body.

It may not sound very good when I describe it but trust my, this manga is amazing, thus far. The dialogue is amazing, the story is  interesting and the art is fascinating. But where this manga really shines, in my opinion, is in it's characters. And we will talk about them know.

CHARACTERS REVIEW

Askalad - I am starting with Askalad because he is my favorite character. Askalad, in my opinion, is the most developed character in the manga, thus far. He was born to a slave mother, who was a princess of Wales and a Nobleman father of Denmark. He lived with his mother in the stables and took the name Askalad (which literally translates to covered in ash) because he was constantly covered in dirt and quote "horse shit". At the age of eleven his father took him in his hall and Askalad took his revange, killing his father and framing his step-brother. Askalad through out the whole of the manga claims that he hates all of his subordinates as they are of danish blood, but while you are reading the manga you can see that this is all a facade. He gives Thorfinn some good advice and clearly cares for him, he gives all his gold to Atli, he calls Bjorn a friend and he even gives his life for prince Canute.  Askalad's through name was Artorius Caestus the true king of Britain, and no matter how much he denies it Thorfinn looks at Askalad as a mentor figure.

Thorfinn - Thorfinn is the 2nd most developed character in the manga. "From a merry little boy, he became a monster". In his flashback we can see that Thorfinn is not much different from a normal boy. But his father's death seemingly warped his mind and turned him into an absolute monster. Throughout the prologue of the manga he seemingly doesn't "grow" too much but, you can clearly see how much he has grown. In Chapter 55: End of Prologue Thorfinn's eyes tear up as he stands over Askalad's body. You can see the pain his going through. He lost a person who was like a second father to him.

Thorkell  - Alright this is the last character we will look at. Thorkell the Giant. Thorkell is the first villain in the manga. He is the true definition of a viking. He lives only to fight strong opponents, drink, eat and rape. Throughout the manga he pursues Askalad's party to fight Thorfinn, the son of his former rival.  When he finally catches up to him he loses and excepts that he is not as strong as him. Thorkell joins Canute's rebellion and ends up becoming Canute's bodyguard after Askalad's "madness".

Alright well that's the end of my review. I defenetly recommend this manga. It is one  of my favorites, if not my favorite. It's characters are really fascinating and the art is magnificent. You can read it at www.mangareader.net/125/vinland-saga.html.
